English As a Global Language

English is considered to be a very flexible language with rich vocabulary. It is the only language that has or needs numerous dictionaries and books of synonyms like “Oxford Thesaurus”. It doesn’t mind borrowing words from other languages like “shampoo” from India and “ketchup” from China and many other words. It is claimed by linguists that English consists of 1,000,000 words, and it is more than any other language has.

English has become the dominant language of communications, science, business, entertainment, and diplomacy. It spread with the growth of the UK, and then with the growing economic and cultural influence of the United States. USA’s status as a global superpower since World War II has significantly accelerated the language’s spread across the planet.

Some linguists believe that it is no longer the exclusive cultural property of “native speakers”, but is rather a language that is absorbing aspects of cultures worldwide as it continues to grow. Read the rest of this entry »
